When Does a Tooth Need to Come Out Today?
We always try to save a natural tooth first — with a filling, crown, or root canal. An emergency extraction is the answer when the tooth can’t be saved and waiting would mean more pain or a spreading infection.
Broken Below the Gum Line
When a tooth fractures so far down that there isn’t enough structure left to hold a crown, removal is the practical solution. Read what to expect from a broken tooth repair visit if there’s still tooth to save.
Abscess the Tooth Can’t Survive
A pocket of infection at the root causes severe pain and swelling. Root canal treatment saves many abscessed teeth; when the damage is too far gone, extraction ends the infection at its source — something antibiotics alone can’t do.
Decay Too Deep to Restore
When decay has progressed beyond what a filling, crown, or root canal can fix, extraction prevents the infection from spreading to surrounding teeth and bone.
Painful or Infected Wisdom Tooth
A partially erupted wisdom tooth with a swollen, infected gum flap can go from annoying to unbearable fast. Most are removed in-house — see our wisdom teeth removal page.
Loose From Advanced Gum Disease
When periodontal disease has destroyed the supporting bone, a loose, painful tooth may need to come out to protect the rest of your mouth. We treat the gum disease in the same office.
Trauma or a Cracked Root
A fall or a hard bite can split a tooth or its root beyond repair. If the fracture extends below the gum line or into the root, extraction is often the most practical solution.
The Same-Day Extraction Process
From your call to the drive home, here’s how an emergency extraction works at Cannady Dental.
Call or Text, and We Triage
Reach us at (727) 441-3523. Our team assesses how urgent your problem is, gives you an exact arrival time, and starts your paperwork by phone. We’re appointment-based rather than walk-in, which is usually faster for you.
Exam & Digital X-Ray
Dr. Cannady examines the tooth and takes digital X-rays to see the roots, bone, and any infection. He tells you honestly whether the tooth can be saved; if not, he explains the extraction and gives you a written quote.
Numbing, Sedation & Removal
The area is thoroughly numbed. Nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation is available if you’re anxious. A simple extraction takes a few minutes; a surgical extraction (tooth broken at the gum line) takes longer and may involve a small incision.
Aftercare & a Replacement Plan
Gauze controls bleeding while the clot forms. You leave with written aftercare instructions and, unless it was a wisdom tooth, a plan for replacing the tooth so the gap doesn’t cause problems later.
Aftercare After an Emergency Extraction
The extraction site typically heals within one to two weeks, and most patients feel back to normal within a few days. For the first 24 hours: bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, and avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting, or straws so the protective clot stays in place. Then stick to soft foods for a few days, take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed, and gently rinse with salt water after the first day.
Avoid smoking, which delays healing and can cause dry socket. Dr. Cannady provides comprehensive written aftercare instructions and is available to answer questions during your recovery. If pain increases a few days after the extraction instead of fading, call us.
Replacing the Tooth So the Gap Doesn’t Become a Problem
Leaving a gap allows neighboring teeth to shift and the jawbone to shrink. Dr. Cannady explains your options before the tooth comes out — and handles all of them in the same office.
Dental Implants
A titanium post in the jawbone topped with a natural-looking crown — the closest thing to your own tooth. In select cases, a temporary tooth can be placed the same day as the implant. Learn about dental implants.
Dental Bridges
A fixed restoration anchored to neighboring teeth or implants that “bridges” the gap. Durable and natural-looking — see dental bridges.
Dentures — Even Same Day
For several missing teeth, a partial or full denture restores function. With immediate dentures, the denture is planned before extraction and placed the same day, so you never go without teeth. Explore dentures and snap-in dentures.
Emergency Extraction Cost — With or Without Insurance
Cannady Dental is a fee-for-service practice: the exam comes first, then a transparent, itemized quote, and no treatment starts until you’ve approved the cost. A simple extraction costs considerably less than a surgical one, and sedation is quoted separately so you can decide. New patients pay $99 for the comprehensive exam and digital X-rays — exactly what’s needed to decide whether the tooth can be saved. For a deeper breakdown of timing and cost, read emergency tooth extraction: how fast and what it costs.
You do not need dental insurance to be seen. We file claims for all PPO plans, Cherry monthly payment plans are available, and the Healthy Patient Membership Plan ($420/year) includes an emergency exam plus 10% off treatment. See every option on our affordable dentist in Clearwater page.
